The Importance of Theory and Frame of Reference in Occupational Therapy

After reading the article titled "Putting OT Theory Into Action: Knowing and Applying Frames of Reference", I definitely got a better understanding of the importance of using frames of reference and how they are better used to benefit the client in the best ways possible. This article demonstrated how knowing when to apply a frame of reference and which models to use increase the occupational performance of the individual tremendously. There were two examples given on two very different case scenarios, but it was neat to see how when using the correct models and theories for occupational therapy they both improved their functions. Although their goals were very different, a common denominator with these two clients was looking at them from a holistic approach rather than simply just a single issue and then utilizing the appropriate frames of reference to better treat these clients. This article was definitely a good source of information as well as an excellent source as to clarifying and enforcing the importance of using frames of reference, models, and theories during the practice of occupational therapy.

How does the OTPF influence OT practice?

The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework is an efficient guide for occupational therapy practitioners to practice this profession in such a way that promotes the overall individual and encourages better performance for the client. The OTPF takes a top-down approach which begins by looking at the person as a whole and then proceeding with a treatment plan from there. The OTPF plays an important role in ensuring that occupational therapists do not lose sight of the individual as a whole and to make sure that the client is way more than just the reason they are wanting to receive occupational therapy. The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework serves as an excellent way to maintain the goal of the profession and to even promote further growth in the field of occupational therapy.
